Essence and Blood are the Best Tonics: A Single Formula to Replenish Essence and Generate Blood for Vitality
We all know that essence and blood are the finest "tonics" within the body. There is a specific formula that can help us replenish essence and generate blood, ensuring your vitality is at its peak.
Many people start experiencing minor health issues once they reach middle age. They get out of breath after walking just a few steps, feel weakness in their lower back and knees after climbing a few flights of stairs, and suffer from occasional leg cramps during sleep. Even when hospital check-ups show no major issues with various indicators, they simply don't feel right. From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine, this is mostly caused by a deficiency of essence and blood. Essence is the source of human life, and blood is the vital carrier of nutrients. When essence and blood are depleted, physical health will inevitably suffer.
So, how do we replenish Qi and blood? We must look at three organs: the liver, spleen, and kidney. The liver stores blood, acting like a "blood bank" responsible for storage and regulation. The kidney stores essence, which can be transformed into blood, serving as a vital source of essence and blood. The spleen is the "foundation of acquired constitution," converting the food we eat into nutrients to provide the raw materials for generating Qi and blood. If issues arise with the liver, spleen, or kidney, the production and storage of essence and blood will be affected.
This is where Yixue Shengjing Decoction comes into play. This formula consists of medicinal ingredients such as donkey-hide gelatin (Ejiao) and tortoise-shell glue. Among them, the "three glues"—donkey-hide gelatin, tortoise-shell glue, and antler glue—are the main forces. Donkey-hide gelatin replenishes blood, tortoise-shell glue nourishes Yin, and antler glue supplements Yang; together, they fill the body's deficiencies from different angles. Additionally, "flesh and blood" ingredients like deer blood, beef marrow, placenta (Ziheche), and velvet antler help the body restore its hematopoietic function, allowing it to produce more fresh blood.
Regarding herbal components, this formula integrates the classic Siwu Decoction and Sijunzi Decoction. Prepared rehmannia, white peony root, and angelica are responsible for nourishing the blood. When angelica, atractylodes, and poria are combined with the "king of Qi replenishment," astragalus, the sufficient Qi can then generate blood. By tonifying both Qi and blood, the effect is enhanced. Prepared fleeceflower root (He Shou Wu) replenishes essence and blood, while salt-processed anemarrhena enters the kidney meridian to nourish Yin and moisten dryness, further strengthening the kidney-tonifying effect.
Replenishing alone isn't enough; the body must also be able to absorb it. Therefore, the formula includes digestive herbs like chicken gizzard membrane (Jineijin), hawthorn, and malt. These help the spleen and stomach digest those rich, cloying medicines without adding a burden to the digestive system. Furthermore, blood deficiency can lead to blood stasis; chicken gizzard membrane, hawthorn, and wine-processed rhubarb can promote blood circulation and resolve stasis, while malt soothes the liver and regulates Qi to ensure smooth flow throughout the body. Finally, jujube is used to harmonize all the ingredients. This completes the Yixue Shengjing Decoction, which strengthens the spleen, tonifies the kidneys, generates blood, and replenishes essence.
