Everyone is familiar with the traditional Chinese medicinal herb Angelica sinensis. It has a gentle nature and is excellent at nourishing the blood, promoting blood circulation, and moistening the intestines to relieve constipation. Today, Dr. Li will share three classic pairings using Angelica.

Angelica sinensis paired with Scutellaria baicalensis

Scutellaria baicalensis is bitter and cold in nature, specifically targeting damp-heat. Combining Angelica sinensis and Scutellaria baicalensis allows them to balance each other: Scutellaria can suppress the dryness and heat of Angelica, while Angelica can mitigate the bitter cold of Scutellaria, thereby clearing heat and promoting diuresis without harming the blood. It is highly effective for symptoms such as bitter taste in the mouth, dry mouth, scanty and yellow urine, abdominal bloating, poor appetite, and sticky stools.

Angelica sinensis paired with Poria cocos

Poria cocos has a mild nature and excels at strengthening the spleen and harmonizing the stomach, as well as promoting diuresis and removing dampness. When used together, Angelica sinensis and Poria cocos are particularly effective in addressing edema and indigestion caused by damp-heat, such as swelling in the lower limbs, a heavy sensation in the body, loss of appetite, loose and unformed stools, and scanty and yellow urine.

Angelica sinensis paired with Coix seed

Coix seed has a cool nature and is effective in clearing heat, promoting diuresis to remove dampness, strengthening the spleen, stopping diarrhea, reducing edema, and providing anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects. When combined with angelica root, they complement each other and enhance the effects of promoting diuresis and draining dampness, clearing heat and expelling pus, as well as strengthening the spleen and stopping diarrhea. This combination can easily address issues such as joint redness, swelling, and pain caused by damp-heat, limited joint mobility, and sticky stools.
