In clinical practice, too many patients have been observed trapped in the vicious cycle of "relieving itching - recurrence - increasing medication dosage": corticosteroid ointments provide short-term itch relief but thin the skin and increase sensitivity; immunosuppressants temporarily suppress skin lesions but lead to spleen-stomach deficiency cold and dual deficiency of qi and blood.

This is precisely what Traditional Chinese Medicine emphasizes as "treating the symptoms but not the root cause"The skin is the largest detoxification organ of the human body. When the pathogenic mechanisms of blood heat, blood stasis, and blood dryness within the body are not resolved, merely "patching up" the skin is akin to vigorously wiping the windshield of a car with a smoking engine—the black smoke will only grow thicker.

From the perspective of Traditional Chinese Medicine theory, the core pathogenesis of psoriasis lies in "blood heat and wind dryness."Professor Wang Qi, a master of traditional Chinese medicine, points out that this disease is often caused by emotional disturbances and improper diet, leading to liver depression transforming into fire and internal accumulation of heat toxins; or by external contraction of wind pathogens, which contend with internal heat toxins, stagnating in the skin and causing the illness. Although the disease location is in the skin, its root lies in the five zang organs, particularly closely related to the liver, lung, and spleen.

Today, I will share an empirical formula from Master of Traditional Chinese Medicine Wang Qi—Niujiao Yinxie DecoctionThis prescription primarily focuses on clearing heat and detoxifying, cooling blood and dispelling wind, while also considering the regulation of visceral functions. It addresses both the symptoms and root causes, demonstrating significant clinical efficacy.

Formulation:Buffalo Horn, Rehmannia Root, Tree Peony Bark, Red Peony Root, Arnebia Root, Smilax Glabra Rhizome, Densefruit Pittany Root-bark, Lightyellow Sophora Root, Licorice Root.

Water buffalo horn is a powerful agent for clearing heat and cooling blood. The Compendium of Materia Medica describes it as effective against "heat-toxin wind and all heat toxins," capable of directly entering the blood aspect to extinguish intense blood heat. Raw rehmannia root nourishes yin and enriches blood, akin to infusing a dry blood pool with clear spring water, preventing the aggravation of blood dryness caused by blood heat damaging yin.

Peony bark "cools the blood without causing stasis," red peony root "disperses stagnant blood and promotes the flow of stagnant qi," and gromwell root "activates blood circulation, cools the blood, detoxifies, and promotes eruption." These three herbs act like a "combat engineering unit," clearing stasis from the blood, opening pathways for the expulsion of heat toxins, and restoring the flow of obstructed qi and blood.

Smilax glabra is the "essential herb for detoxification," excelling at clearing damp-heat and toxic pathogens. Dictamnus dasycarpus and Sophora flavescens clear heat, dry dampness, and relieve itching, akin to "opening windows for ventilation" for the skin, alleviating surface itching and redness, thereby buying time for internal regulation.

Licorice harmonizes various medicinal ingredients, protects the spleen and stomach, and prevents bitter-cold substances from damaging healthy qi.

Special Reminder:Even the best prescription requires syndrome differentiation and treatment! Individual constitution and disease course vary, so medication adjustments must be made under the guidance of a professional TCM practitioner. Do not apply prescriptions on your own.

A patient once followed a prescription exactly but experienced diarrhea and fatigue—it turned out he had a constitution of spleen and stomach deficiency-cold, and the unmodified bitter-cold medicine damaged his spleen yang. This precisely illustrates the TCM principle of "a thousand prescriptions for a thousand people":

Exuberant Blood Heat Pattern(Erythema bright red, abundant scales, dry mouth and constipation): may addHoneysuckle, DandelionEnhance heat-clearing and detoxification.

Blood Stasis Obstructing the Collaterals Type(Dark red skin lesions, thickened plaques, purplish dark tongue): AddPeach kernel, safflowerEnhance blood circulation and remove blood stasis.

Blood Deficiency and Wind-Dryness PatternThe skin lesions are dry with fine scaling, and the complexion is pale.Reduce Sophora Flavescens and Smilax GlabraAdd Angelica sinensis and Spatholobus suberectusNourish blood and moisten dryness.

Authentic Traditional Chinese Medicine treatment is akin to "tailoring clothes to fit," adjusting the prescription's "cold, warm, ascending, and descending" properties based on each individual's tongue coating, pulse condition, and constitution. This is also the core value of the Niujiao Yinxie Decoction: it is not a "universal formula" but rather opens up the approach of "internal-to-external regulation"—when the "heat toxins" within the body are purified and the flow of qi and blood becomes smooth, the skin, as the "mirror of the body's surface," naturally exhibits a healthy glow.
