White Atractylodes (Bai Zhu) is a commonly used herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and one of the key tonic medicinals. It possesses effects such as invigorating the spleen and strengthening the stomach, supplementing the middle and boosting qi, and promoting diuresis to reduce edema. Additionally, it helps relieve tension and prevent constipation. However, during its use, certain contraindications must be observed, including restricted populations and incompatible combinations, and it should be taken under medical guidance.

I. Effects

1.Invigorating the Spleen and Strengthening the Stomach:

Bai Zhu enhances the digestive functions of the stomach and intestines, stimulates appetite, and prevents functional gastrointestinal disorders, poor appetite, and other symptoms caused by spleen and stomach weakness.

2.Supplementing the Middle and Boosting Qi:

Bai Zhu boosts immunity and strengthens the body’s resistance to disease, addressing symptoms such as physical weakness and easy fatigue due to insufficiency of middle qi.

3.Promoting Diuresis to Reduce Edema:

Bai Zhu supports water metabolism in the body, facilitating the elimination of excess fluids and effectively preventing or treating edema.

II. Functions

1.Relieving Tension:

Bai Zhu can alleviate nervous tension and emotional instability, offering a mild sedative and calming effect that may improve work and study efficiency.

2.Preventing Constipation:

By stimulating intestinal peristalsis and enhancing gastrointestinal digestion, Bai Zhu promotes bowel movements, helping to prevent constipation.

III. Contraindications

1.Restricted Populations:

As a warm-tonifying herb, Bai Zhu is not suitable for individuals with a heat-prone constitution or those suffering from heat-related illnesses, who should avoid large doses. Additionally, people with yin deficiency and dry thirst, pregnant women, breastfeeding mothers, and children should refrain from using Bai Zhu whenever possible.

2.Incompatible Combinations:

Bai Zhu should not be consumed with foods such as peaches, plums, fish, or cilantro, as this may lead to adverse reactions. If there is a need to use Bai Zhu, it should be administered rationally under the guidance of a qualified physician to avoid indiscriminate use.

When incorporating Bai Zhu into treatment, adherence to TCM principles and professional advice is essential to ensure safety and efficacy.
