Source: Roots and rhizomes of Ramie Boehmeria nivea (L.) Gaud.
Phytomorphology: Perennial half-shrub, 1 to 2 meters high. Stem erect, terete, much branched, greenish brown, densely covered with coarse long hairs. Leaves alternate, stipules 2, detached, caducous, leaf blade broadly ovate or ovate, apex acuminate or subcaudate, base broadly cuneate or truncate, margin densely toothed, green, rough and scattered sparsely hairy above, densely intertwined white pilose below, basal veins 3. Flowers unisexual, usually monoecious, inflorescences paniculate, axillary, male inflorescences usually below female inflorescences, male flowers small, sessile, yellow-white, perianth segments 4, stamens 4, with staminodes, female flowers light green, clusters globose, ca. 2 mm diam. The achene is small, ellipsoid, densely short hairy, wrapped in persistent perianth, with one seed.

Origin and distribution: Widely cultivated in China, Henan, Shandong and southern Shaanxi, also wild.
